Norman Community Dog Park .... beginings

A Norman Community Volunteer Group was organized in April 2003 with the function of developing an off-leash Dog Park for the Norman community. The effort was started by Amy and Marshall Gillory gathering petition signatures and Betty Blatt out distributing Dog Park information flyers in Norman. They combined theirr efforts to assess the Norman community interest in building a dog park.

The Norman City Council scheduled a Dog Park Sub-Committee and met with Amy and Betty and several voulunteers. The council encouraged them to proceed with developing a Dog Park  with the stipulation that all equipment, labour, and supplies would be donated totally by the community and would not be funded by the city of Norman. The Park was to be a two acre site located just north of the soccer field in Griffin Park located off 12th Ave NE and Robinson St. The entrance off 12th Ave sign read Field # 17.

Paved parking, pole lighting, and partial fencing was already in place. The Parks and Recreation Planning Dept.supervised the development of the Dog Park.

Southwestern Wire donated all of the fencing needed for the two acre site. The Big Event Group from OU donated the cement and installed most of the poles at the site. The last of the poles were placed by a volunteer group organized by Mary Katherine Long of Norman. The poles were  purchased with community donations.

The fencing had to be strung on the poles. The target date was tentatively set for the end of July. Gating, a water supply for the dogs, doggie bags, and paving to accomodate wheelchairs and entrance for the dogs were a necessary part of the park. Later on benches and additions were to be added to the Park as donated funds allowed.

Funds for the park have been donated totally by the Norman Community, residents, students, and businesses. Five veterinarians in Norman contributed piggy bank funds for four months running.

We needed (and STILL need) donation of funds and volunteers to complete the Dog Park. What a great community gathering place for dogs to run, play, and exercise while the owners visit and enjoy the outdoors with others in the Norman community.
